There was a time, remembered by those of us of a certain age group, when smoking was not only socially acceptable, it was the ‘done thing’. What is a Squonk Mod?

A regular vape mod is usually an all-in-one unit consisting of all the elements needed to vape -such as the battery, the coil, the reservoir and the tip through which you inhale the vapour. With this type of standard vape mod, you have to refill the reservoir by dripping the e-liquid – from a separate vessel – through the mouthpiece.

The difference with a squonk mod is that it has a squeezable bottle as part of the package, also built in. The first model on our list, from DOVPO, is a typical squonk mod except that it fills from the top. The makers claim this is a world-first. We should say that, as vaping is a relatively new market there are many brands that you may not know, and some developments and design features that may also be unusual to both us and our readers. This is neatly designed model in a rather odd but fetching black and red colour scheme.

The bottle itself is a soft silicone squeeze bottle for ease of use, features a 90watt heating coil. It is easy to fill through the top opening, which seals securely. There is also a clear OLED screen that will tell you of your current status – and any problems – and it is a compact and well-made device. A single customer review so far gives it five stars.

 2. Vandy Vape Pulse Dual Mod

One thing we should state clearly here is that, as with all of these products, the buyer must be 18 or over to purchase. You will be asked for a signature on delivery, and perhaps proof of age. The reason for this is that these devices can be used with e-liquids that include nicotine. This is a neat little vape mod – it claims to be the smallest dual-battery squonk mod available – and it comes with an easy to use juice bottle that can be removed.

The reason for the dual batteries – which are not included – is to increase power. This squonk mod is fitted with an ‘improved chip’ which allows it to reach 220W, which is considerably more than the one above – for example – and will help it vaporise your liquid very quickly. Ergonomically designed for ease of use, the only customer comment we have to mention is a single 5-star that says it is ‘great’.

3. Aspire Feedlink Revvo

This rather neatly designed squonk mod is from a leading player in the market, and comes with a full accessory pack and very good instructions. The 7ml silicone bottle is a nice size and easy to use – it fills from the bottom as usual with these – and the pack also includes a 2ml boost tank for if you happen to run short. It comes with a spare coil, and it’s the coil that makes this one interesting.

This model uses an ARC coil; this is a flat radial coil which apparently provides a more solid cloud of vapour and therefore better flavour. It is powered by the standard 18650 battery – again, not supplied – and also comes with spare O-rings. While there are no customer reviews to go on, we like the way this kit is put together and uses the latest technology.

4. Uwell Blocks Squonker Kit 90W

The designer of this model, from Uwell, has gone all-out to make it look good with a sort of industrial style that is very attractive. It’s a 90W model – this seems to be the standard – and has a patented juice pump design. Clever circuit board and electronics design means it can begin heating within 0.008s – that’s very, very quickly indeed! It has a leak-proof connector so is safe to use without possible damage, and fills from the bottom.

This is a nicely put-together kit that comes with a spare coil and full set of O-rings, plus instructions, a USB charging cable and many more accessories. The battery is, as is usual, not included and we would like to see a spare bottle supplied, but we think that for design alone it’s pretty neat, and we like it.

5. Aspire Feedlink Revvo Gunmetal

Our second choice from leading brand Aspire is this one, and it is identical to the other except it’s presented in a rather nice gunmetal finish, so we thought we would include it! The 7ml silicone bottle is a nice size and easy to use – it fills from the bottom as usual with these – and the pack also includes a 2ml boost tank for if you happen to run short. It comes with a spare coil, and it’s the coil that makes this one interesting.

6. Original Vandy Vape 90W Pulse X

We understand that this model was one of the original squonk mods and, as such, is something of an iconic design. In fact, it’s a very neatly designed device, and one that you can have in various colours including black, silver and red, as well as a few ‘frosted’ finishes which look great. It’s easy to use, a 90Watt model – so standard in that respect – and comes with no batteries, which again is very much the norm.

We like this one as it has clearly been put together by someone who understands simplicity in design. It comes with a USB cable and a couple of other accessories, but as far as we can see there is no spare coil, which is a pity. However, at the price, it’s a bit of a bargain compared to other similarly powered models, and the sole customer review gives it the full 5-stars.

7. Wismec Luxotic 100watt

This is a very nice-looking device and described as ‘authentic’, so we can only guess that it has a following. We say guess, as there is very little information on this device to go on. The finish is indeed luxurious, as the name suggests, and the 100Watt power puts it a little ahead of the rest, plus it is a standard bottom filler, single button model that is nicely designed with a sort of ‘nostalgic’ look, a bit like a classic cigarette lighter!

We have deduced that it comes with a spare coil, which is a good thing. This one does come with a couple of customer reviews, and they are quite detailed. Unfortunately they are not very good. One states that while it is a great little device that is ‘lightweight and well-made’, but both give it only one star, and for the same reason: it keeps -auto-firing. This is a problem of some concern, so we can’t recommend it.

 

As a relatively new type of vape mod, we chose only the best squonk mods we could find, and we reckon this list of seven should give you a good idea of what you are looking at. Before we go on to give you a verdict, let’s take a moment to talk about some of the factors you need to think about when buying one of these.

Buyer’s Guide – What to Look For

One of the problems with products that are new to the market, or that you may not be familiar with, is the use of jargon. For example, when you investigate these devices further, you will come across a great number of references to the ‘RDA’, yet very little explanation as to what this means.

The RDA is your atomiser. This is the heated coil system that is necessary for heating the e-liquid. RDA stands for ‘rebuildable drip atomiser’. All of these have this type of atomiser as opposed to the alternative, the RTA, which is the ‘rebuildable tank atomiser’. Basically, it’s the bit that makes the heat, and you can rebuild it by exchanging a new coil.

That’s a bit of technical detail out of the way, so now let’s talk about a few factors you need to look for.

Wattage –  this is the power of the electrical circuit and determines how quickly and efficiently your mod can vaporise the e-liquid. The standard is 90W, but there are couple on the list that provide more.

Capacity – the capacity of the bottle determines how much e-liquid you can have in your device at the same time. As these are quite new to the market, not every one has such information available, but the standard seems to be between 5 and 10ml.

Accessories – what do you get with the squonk mod? Some come with spare coils, which is always worth considering, while others come with more comprehensive accessory packages. Check the details out before you commit to buy.

That’s the three most important factors to consider, and we will briefly mention cost as there is a difference between the cheapest and most expensive of these, if not by much.
